“Growing up queer and non-binary in Calgary, Alberta was an incredibly lonely and confusing experience. Despite being allowed to socially transition at home, the schoolyard was fraught with challenges and I never felt like I belonged anywhere. Reconnecting with Elinor 35 years later I found a kindred spirit as she too struggled with her identity during that pivotal time in her life. This left me wondering, how wonderful it would have been to have a queer friend at that time to comfort each other as we struggled against the rigid heteronormative binary that existed in 1988. This led us to explore the science around middle childhood, the educational curriculum of the 80s, and what the social environment was like in Calgary at the time, and this is what has become Late in 88.”

“Until Late in 88, the challenge of claiming my sexual and gender identity has been a quiet one. Growing up in a traditional family in conservative 80’s Calgary, I had no way of exploring the incongruity I felt in my body. When Bronwin and I reconnected and started to talk about our shared childhood we both realized that so many of these identity issues started to form in middle childhood. Having been silent for so long, utilizing the podcast format has proved to be incredibly provocative and liberating. Creating a safe space to share and learn about these early ages with Bronwin, our classmates and incredible experts, Late in 88 has been a transformative journey that I know will offer a resonant experience for our listeners.”
